Project overview

A Sydney-based contract electronics manufacturer engaged ASTCAD for a rolling jig-and-fixture programme. Over 6 months, 38 custom fixtures were designed and 3D printed — assembly aids, drilling jigs, test cradles, soldering supports and component sorters — directly replacing externally-machined fixtures.

How we approach 3D printed jigs and fixtures

3D printed jigs and fixtures earn their keep by cutting tooling lead time from weeks to days. Our process starts on the production floor: we document the assembly or inspection step the fixture supports, capture the part geometry it must locate against, and design locating features with sensible tolerances for the chosen printing process. Materials are selected for the duty — carbon-filled nylon for stiffness, TPU for soft jaws, standard PETG or ABS for light-duty locating fixtures — and we design for the printer’s strengths, consolidating what would have been multi-part machined assemblies into single prints with compliant features built in.

Deliverables for production tooling projects

Each fixture is delivered with a parametric CAD model, a drawing defining critical locating dimensions and material/print specifications, and print-ready files with documented orientation and settings so replacements can be produced identically. Where fixtures wear, we version the design files and keep the revision history clean, letting production teams reprint the current revision on demand instead of waiting on toolroom availability.

Measuring the payoff of printed tooling

The business case for 3D printed jigs and fixtures is easy to measure: tooling lead time, tooling cost and iteration count.
