Case Study Highlights
Thermal Qualification Analysis For Power Plants
The Client:
- Industry : Thermal Radiation Detection Systems Manufacturer
The Objective:
- Determining maximum temperature at the detector based on the thermal load curve at outer housing of the radiation detector system.
The Solution:
- A detailed three dimensional Finite Element Model was constructed for Thermal Qualification analysis of the Detector Assembly. The software used to perform Thermal analysis was ANSYS v13.0 Mechanical Module. The model design and geometry was done using Solid Works Software. The analysis was performed to determine the maximum temperature of the detector by applying the Thermal Load Curve at the outer Housing which is having a very high peak for a very small duration. The objective was to find out the maximum temperature at the Detector when this peak temperature occurs at the outer Housing.
The Challenges:
- Accurate modelling of the detection device to capture physics during thermal loading
- Delivering solution results with tight deadlines to ensure reduced development time
A leading manufacturer of thermal Radiation Detection System for power plants consulted ASTCAD to virtually test their new radiation detection system design, considering thermal parameters. Their prime objective was to reduce physical tests by incorporating virtual simulations early during the design phase.
Benefits:
- Shortened product development time with virtual simulations
- Reduced cost required in validating the design through physical test trials
- Provided opportunity for the manufacturer to implement alternative design concepts

When thermal qualification analysis is required
Thermal qualification analysis answers a procurement-critical question: will this equipment survive its rated thermal environment for its rated life? The analysis models the equipment under the specified thermal cycles and operating loads, evaluates stresses, expansion conflicts and material degradation pathways, and documents the margin against the qualification criteria. For powerline and electrical hardware — this project’s territory — the qualification evidence is often the difference between a product listed with the network operator and one that is not.
What the qualification deliverable includes
The report documents geometry, materials, thermal load cases, analysis methodology and results against the acceptance criteria, structured so the client’s customer — typically a utility or major contractor — can audit the qualification without further engineering support. Where the analysis exposes a marginal detail, we recommend the design change and re-verify it, because a qualification report that fails its subject helps nobody.
Equipment manufacturers selling into utility and infrastructure markets use this service to clear technical approval processes. Send the product drawings and the qualification specification, and we will scope the analysis with the evidence trail your customer requires.
